ST. LOUIS (AP) — A suspect is dead after being shot by a St. Louis police officer.
Officers were on special duty patrol Monday night after a rash of robberies and attempted robberies in an area of south St. Louis when they saw two men in an alley and approached them for questioning.
One of the men took off running, then reached for a gun and tried to shoot, but the gun jammed. Police say as the man tried to get the gun to fire, bullets fell out.
One of the officers fired several shots at the suspect, who was struck in the abdomen. He was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead.
The name of the suspect, in his late 20s or early 30s, was not released.
The officer's name also was not released. He is on administrative leave pending an internal investigation.
