KANSAS CITY, MO. - St. Luke's United Methodist Church canceled Sunday service on July 26 to put their faith into action. And, Truman Elementary School is glad they did.

More than 250 volunteers showed up. They cleaned gutters, baseboards, rust, you name it.

"We're calling it faith in action," said church member Garry Kemp. "We're not just talking about it. We're out doing it."

"This is fantastic what you guys are doing here. This is wonderful," said Erin Wisemore, occupational therapist.

Wisemore works for Hickman Mills School District. She's so grateful for the volunteers' help, and she's not alone.

"They're all over the building, humming like busy bees. They're leaving no stone unturned and it is just wonderful," said Principal Shaunda Fowler.

From painting to planting, volunteers worked to make sure Truman Elementary will be ready for kids come the first day of school.

"We wanted to do something beyond our church walls for the community," said St. Luke's UMC Pastor Keith Morgan.

St. Luke's already had a relationship with Truman Elementary. But, this definitely took it up a notch.

"They understand this is a part of their calling to be a part of God's church. It goes beyond the walls of our building," said Principal Fowler.

St. Luke's United Methodist held services at 6 p.m. instead. It's part of a four week effort to put faith into action.
