BONNER SPRINGS, KAN. - School districts across the metro are seeing an increase in the number of students signing up for the free and reduced lunch program.

The Bonner Springs School District has more students using the program than ever before.

Nearly half, 49 percent of students, in the Bonner Springs School District are getting help to buy lunch. The district says it's a reflection of the economy.

Families once with two incomes who never imagined they'd need help are now enrolling in the free and reduced lunch program.

Bonner Springs High School Principal Dr. Jerry Abbott said last year students who needed help wouldn't take the paperwork home to give to their parents, but that has changed this year.

"One of the things that we are seeing this year and obviously because we have an increase in our free and reduced program is that that paperwork is going back home and parents are appreciative of that opportunity and are signing that paperwork and getting it back to us," said Dr. Abbott.

Dr. Abbott said some students are embarrassed about being in need and have told the school counselors they're not eating because they're on a diet or they're not feeling well.

But, Dr. Abbott said they make sure they reach out to those students to see if they need help.
