KANSAS CITY, MO - President Obama's pledge of support for gay rights drew a big reaction from advocates in the metro and across the nation. Some call the President's vow to change policies, like "don't ask, don't tell," historic.

President Obama also said he backs the Mathew Sheppard Hate Crimes Act.

"It's a really important and auspicious time to be telling this story when it's becoming a real national issue, the question of equal rights for all citizens," said Eric Rosen, Kansas City Repertory Theatre artistic director.

The Kansas City Repertory Theater will feature a play about the gay teen from Laramie, Wy. It will mark 11 years since Sheppard was murdered. The theatre is one of 150 reading the play, and directors say the stage will serve as a means to talk about gay rights.
