Program Hopes Liberty Residents Spend $20 A Week, Locally
LIBERTY, Mo. - The tight economy has Liberty business leaders and students from William Jewell College working together to show the public how it can help businesses keep its doors open.

The goal is to have Liberty residents spend $20 a week for 20 weeks at stores, shops and restaurants within the city limits to help the local economy grow.

Dr. Cecelia Robinson, an English professor at William Jewell College, had her business writing class work on the 20/20 Project with community leaders to urge residents to spend locally.

"To spend $20 for 20 weeks is not very much," Dr. Robinson said. "You could go to the hardware at Frevert's instead of going to Lowe's or instead of going to Home Depot."

Spending locally not only helps businesses but the money goes to improve city services and it increases sales tax revenue.

Sherry Miller owns Coming Home, a home decor store on the square. Hers was one of the businesses students interviewed for the project.

Miller hopes residents see the value of the 20/20 campaign and become frequent local shoppers.

"I want people to realize in small stores like this there are unique things that you are not going to get at the box stores," Miller said.

In fact, Coming Home has a wine bar in the back of the store so patrons can shop and enjoy a little vino.

"I just hope people continue to come to the square here in Liberty," Miller said.
