ATCHISON, Kan. -
An elderly couple in Atchison disappeared Friday, September 11 and the sheriff's department issued a Silver Alert to launch a statewide search for them.
Bob, 74, and Mary Black, 72, were last seen leaving their home on the west side of Atchison.
The Kansas Highway Patrol had planes up searching the entire county for the Blacks. They're also following up on the many tips coming in, but so far no luck bringing them home.
A neighbor told FOX 4 he saw Bob Black driving away from his house on Pacific Street. Mary may have been with him, but he wasn't sure.
By Saturday, when the couples' son couldn't find his parents, he called police.
"He came up on Saturday afternoon to assist his father mowing the yard and discovered he wasn't there and he began to get concerned," said Atchison County Sheriff John Calhoon.
They have reason to be concerned. Bob is diabetic and Mary has Alzheimer's. It appears they left the house without any medication which could be dangerous.
"We saw the cops last night and thought they were talking to Bob about Mary being loose again," said neighbor Cathy Wall. Wall said several people have seen Mary walking around the neighborhood disoriented.
"She wanders into people's houses two, three blocks away. Sits down and says 'I'm home,'" said Wall.
She said the Blacks have lived down the street since she was a little girl. She said everyone in the neighborhood is worried.
"They said they drove off and haven't seen them since. So, I hope they're okay," said Wall.
The sheriff department issued a Silver Alert Sunday. It's similar to an Amber Alert for kids.
"It enables us to do more of a statewide search instead of a local search," said Sheriff Calhoon.
As time ticks away, they're just hoping to get the one phone call that brings Mary and Bob home safe.
"Have a good happy ending before it's too late," said Sheriff Calhoon.
The couple may be in a light blue 1990 Honda Civic with a loud exhaust that hangs from the bottom of the car. It has Kansas plate AWX-605. If you see them, call the Atchison County Sheriff's Office at 913-367-4323 or 911.
