EMPORIA, KAN -
An Emporia State University student-athlete missing since Sunday was the victim of a fatal motorcycle accident north of Emporia. Authorities identified the student as 24-year-old Samuel Jacob Williams, a junior business management major from the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast), in western Africa.
The accident occurred Sunday afternoon near the K-99 intersection with Lyon County Road 190. Authorities suspect Williams lost control of his motorcycle at a curve in the road, struck a road sign, and was thrown from the vehicle. A Lyon County sheriff's deputy located the body approximately one-tenth mile off the roadway late Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 4.
"There is no sign of any foul play involving Mr. Williams," according to a news release from the Emporia Police Department, which also assisted Emporia State University Police and Safety officers in the search and investigation.
Williams, who attended high school in Clermont-Ferrand, France, was an All-American indoor and outdoor track athlete for Emporia State. "He ran 60 meter indoor events and 200 meter outdoor events for the Hornets, and was a member of the school record-setting 4 x 100 meter relay team last year, his first season at ESU," said David Harris, head track and field coach.
ESU's track team has organized a candlelight vigil for Williams, scheduled for 8:00 this evening (Thursday, Nov. 5) at Zola Whitten Track at Welsh Stadium on the ESU campus. Visitors are asked to enter on the west side of the stadium.
"The Emporia State University family shares in the loss of Samuel Williams, and we want his family to know that they are in our thoughts during this difficult time," said Dr. Michael R. Lane, ESU president.
