KANSAS CITY, MO -
The son of the sixth suspect arrested in the Mohler sex crimes case defended his father Monday. Jeffrey Mohler said his father, Darrel Mohler, 72, is an ailing veteran who has been falsely accused.
Darrel Mohler was arrested outside his Florida home Friday, Nov. 13, and charged with raping two children. His brother, Burrel Mohler Sr., is one of four other Mohler men who have been charged with forcible sodomy and rape involving children under the age of 12. The allegations against the Mohler men are directed at instances that allegedly happened in the 1980s and 90s. But Darrel's son, Jeffrey, said his family hasn't been in contact with the Missouri branch of the Mohler family for decades.
"He was disgusted and appalled if this is true," said Jeffrey Mohler of his father responding to the allegations against Burrel Mohler Sr. "He made that statement because he doesn't really know my uncle. He's had very little contact with my uncle through the years."
Darrel is a diabetic who's undergone triple bypass surgery in the past and suffers from COPD, breathing problems and knee ailments. Jeffrey said he fears the allegations against his father may cause more harm to his health.
"My greatest concern is not my father's innocence that's already been established, it's that the shock of all this will be too much for him and will lead to his demise before we can clear his name," he said.
Darrel Mohler has been advised to waive his right to extradition and return to Missouri to clear his name.
"We all are confident once the facts of this come forward that he'll be exonerated," Jeffrey said.
Bond for Darrel Mohler has been set at $40,000 cash, however the family said they don't have the resources to bail him out.
