Attorney General Eric Holder ordered higher security for doctors and abortion clinics Monday morning after the Sunday murder of Wichita's Dr. George Tiller.
Planned Parenthood officials in the metro said they are also taking extra precautions for its employees and patients.
Officials said their clinic in Overland Park will be open for business as usual, but they will do it with heightened security procedures.
Peter Brownlie with Planned Parenthood said Dr. Tiller's loss is a loss for the movement and a loss for the thousands of women around the country who had turned to him for care. He said the appropriate security procedures will be in place because the safety of their patients and staff is a major concern. Brownlie said others have been killed before Dr. Tiller and he doesn't expect it to have negative effects in terms of women who have turned to Planned Parenthood for the last 90 years.
"We get very good support from local law enforcement, police departments throughout our area," said Brownlie. "We have good relationships with FBI personnel here and in Washington, so all appropriate measures are being taken."
Anti-abortion groups are also condemning tiller's murder. The head of "Kansans for Life" said: "We value life, completely deplore violence, and are shocked and very upset by what happened in Wichita."
Dr. Tiller is the fourth doctor to be killed under abortion-related circumstances.
