KANSAS CITY, MO -
Some voters in the metro vote on several big issues on Tuesday, everything from smoking bans to sales tax, but one of the biggest races is in Jackson County. Still, election officials said turnout has been lower than expected.
Voters will be asked to renew a quarter-cent sales tax for the combat anti-drug program. For 20 years, the combat tax has paid to keep anti-drug police squads on the streets and for drug treatment and prevention programs. The combat sales tax doesn't expire until 2011, but supporters decided to hold the vote this year thinking it stands a better chance at passing.
Voters in Clay County will be voting on a law enforcement sales tax and a smoking-ban referendum in Liberty.
In Independence, voters will decide on an 85-million bond issue for school construction and renovation.
In Kansas, Edwardsville voters will consider a half-cent sales tax increase.
Polls open at 6 a.m. in Missouri and at 7 a.m. in Kansas.
