ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -
Businesses in St. Joseph are rolling out the red carpet for Chiefs fans during training camp. Discounts and deals abound for Chiefs fans willing to venture beyond the campus of Missouri Western University.
Restaurants in particular are hoping to win over new customers through giveaways and coupon bargains.
The Hoof and Horn boasts having been voted the best restaurant with the best steak in town, but it's not near the campus or training camp. Still, there's a banner welcoming football fans.
Owner Roy Swope is at training camp, passing out coupons to Chiefs fans for half-price dinners.
"I figure if I can entice them to come down with a discount, buy one dinner, get the other one half-price, I can get some exposure that way," Swope said. "I'm not on the main thoroughfare, so people aren't going to be out shopping and say, 'Oh, there's the Hoof and Horn Steakhouse, lets try it.'"
Swope says as bad as the economy has been, any new business is a big boost for St. Joseph.
Milbourn's restaurant is right on Interstate 29 as fans travel up from Kansas City. Owner Rick Milbourn is giving Chiefs fans at training camp coupons good for a free tenderloin, his house specialty.
"We have people already from Kansas City coming in and saying, 'I heard you had a great tenderloin dinner,' and they'll stop anyway," Milbourn said. "You can sit in line or go to Lee's Summit or wherever and not have such good food. And people want to get away for a few hours, we give them an opportunity to do that."
Both businessmen hope fans will leave with a good taste in their mouths, and return to St. Joe other times during the year.
People in St. Joe are proud of their pioneer heritage and are also hoping fans will visit the Pony Express and Jesse James museums.
