KANSAS CITY, KAN -
Police officers in Kansas City, Kansas, have agreed to a pay freeze in 2010 to avoid the layoff of 16 officers after a police union vote.
Over 300 members of the Fraternal Order of Police voted on the proposal Friday night.
"The KCK Police Department was prepared to deal with the lay-offs and would not have allowed the quality of public safety to suffer," said Kansas City, Kansas, Police Chief Sam Breshears. "Obviously I'm pleased the dedicated officers in the FOP chose the responsible path of cooperating with the Unified Government in dealing with the budget crisis."
As part of the agreement, officers will receive a three percent pay hike in 2011, based on 2009 salaries.
