KANSAS CITY, MO - Keeping you and your property safe from thieves is the goal of police everyday. But sometimes the bad guys don't go quietly, as Kansas City, Missouri, Police working to stop property crimes found out on Thursday after two burglary suspects got into a shootout with detectives.

Sgt. Brad Lemon, a detective with the KCPD Property Crimes Unit, says that property crimes in his patrol area have taken a drop thanks to a more proactive approach to crime.

"Numbers are down, (it's) been pretty successful," said Lemon, who says that it's no secret how he and his officers are becoming more successful. "Just spending some time out there trying to get the bad guys doing the bad things."

Shortly after talking to FOX 4 on Thursday, Sgt. Lemon was performing surveillance on two men suspected of a number of break-ins when the suspects opened fire on him.

No one was hurt in the shooting, and the suspects were taken into custody. One of the men, Jaron Bradley, 19, was charged in Jackson County Court on Friday in connection to the shooting. He is being held on $500,000 cash-only bond.

It was a dangerous situation, but Sgt. Lemon says it's just part of the job.

"We do this work in metro patrol. which has been an area where burglary and theft from autos has been pretty high," said Lemon, who says that the holiday season has been a particularly busy time.

"We do have number of holiday parties where people invite a number of guests and people park their cars on not-as-well-lit streets," said Lemon, who encourages homeowners to notify him when they have a holiday party so police can be on the lookout for thieves. But he says that even if you don't call them, police are likely nearby anyway.

"Even if you don't call us, we are still going to try to find them and hang around in area and identify people attempting to break into vehicles," said Lemon.
