TONGANOXIE, Kan. - A special election in Tonganoxie on Tuesday will determine if buying alcohol on Sundays and holidays should be legal in the town.

The special election will cost the city between $3,000 to $4,000.

Many stores in Missouri and many stores in Kansas now allow for Sunday liquor sales. That was going to be the same in Tonganoxie. The city council even voted to approve the sales on Sundays and holidays, but 60 days later a petition stopped it.

The decision is now in the hands of Tonganoxie residents, who seem to have mixed emotions. Some say they are tired of watching people travel outside of the city to places like Lawrence and Basehor to get what they could be spending their money on in town and those who say six days of liquor sales is enough.

There are two polling sites in town, one at Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the VFW. Voting hours are from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
