KANSAS CITY, MO -
Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson needs just 75 yards to pass Priest Holmes atop the team's all-time rushing list. But if one group of angry Chiefs fans have their way, he'll never get the chance to reach that milestone.
A group of Chiefs fans have posted an Online petition asking the team to bench the controversial running back to keep him from becoming the team's all-time leading rusher.
"While we are thankful for his service, we feel that Larry has been a black eye on the organization," reads the petition, which was written and posted by Chiefs fans Dan Cataldi, Andy Phelan and Joe Pinsky.
Johnson has 5,996 rushing yards as a Chiefs. Priest Holmes has 6,070.
The petition, addressed to GM Scott Pioli, claims that Johnson, who is serving a one-game suspension after making anti-gay slurs in comments on Twitter and to the media as well as apparently mocking head coach Todd Haley's coaching credentials, has never hid his disdain for the organization or the city at large.
"It's not a hidden fact that Larry hates being in Kansas City," reads the petition. "He doesn't like the organization, he doesn't like the fans, he doesn't like the city. He has been more than vocal about how he feels about being a Chief. We've waited for years for him to be traded and we don't believe that there is an offensive line that can open a hole big enough for Larry and the chip on his shoulder to run through. "
As of Wednesday afternoon, the petition had around 3,900 signatures.
Johnson's suspension, which was modified by a settlement with the Chiefs earlier this week, will cost the running back around $315,000.
His agent, Peter Schaffer, told The Associated Press that both sides benefited from the settlement and that Johnson had learned from the entire experience.
"Larry apologized," Schaffer said. "He learned from it and hopefully other people learned from it. My hope is that people learn that something positive can come out of this and that there are words that should not be used because they demean people."
