ATCHISON, Kan. -
It's in your purse, at the office and even at the airport. It's hand sanitizer, and in our H1N1 world, the Center for Disease Control recommends using it to stay healthy. If you use it and it worked for you, you might have an Atchison company to thank.
Amelia Earhart is Atchison's most famous face. But with each pour, mix and sniff, lab manager Monique Huber is helping Atchison become known for something else.
At MGP Ingredients, Incorporated, they turn grain into high quality alcohol for household cleaning products, personal care products...and hand sanitizer.
Because of an agreement with the makers, Vice President of Corporate Relations Steve Pickman can't say which hand sanitizers use MGP's alcohol, but does say the average shipment is thousands of gallons.
"Our high quality good grade industrial alcohol is a major ingredient in many of the world's leading hand sanitizer products," Pickman said.
In Kansas City, restaurant worker Mary Patton said she uses hand sanitizer quite a bit, especially with this season's H1N1 warnings.
Pickman said in the past six to eight months, MGP Ingredients has seen an increase in demand for its alcohol. MGP Ingredients employs 190 employees.
"It's good for the future," Pickman said. "It's certainly good for the consumers, our customers and again, we've been producing this type of alcohol since the 1940's so we're experts at it. We're well known throughout the industry."
So while you won't see its name on a label, it might be an Atchison company's ingredient keeping you, and folks around the world, well.
"There's satisfaction knowing that it's going for a good and healthy purpose," Pickman said.
