KANSAS CITY, MO - The Kansas City Chiefs announced Monday they have released running back Larry Johnson. The release comes weeks after Johnson's fallout from comments he made on Twitter regarding Chiefs Head Coach Todd Haley.

Johnson apologized for his remarks and the Chiefs suspended him for two weeks, but recent developments have Johnson on the sidelines at Arrowhead Stadium for good.

Chiefs Head Coach Todd Haley said during his Monday press conference that the decision to release Johnson was made between himself, owner Clark Hunt and general manager Scott Pioli. Haley also said it was a decision that wasn't made final until Monday morning and that Johnson's past played a part in the decision.

Haley said the release was in the best interest of the team.

In March of 2009 during an interview with 610 Sports, Johnson said he wanted out. It appears now he got what he wanted. In the same interview with 610 Sports, Johnson said he would like to play for the Dallas Cowboys. There's been no word yet on where Johnson may be headed now.

Johnson was under contract with the Kansas City Chiefs until 2012, after signing a five-year contract for $43 million. He needed just 75 yards to breaking the team's career rushing mark.

Johnson established an NFL single-season record with 416 rushing attempts in 2006 when he set a franchise single-season mark with 1,789 rushing yards. He was a first round draft pick in 2003 from Penn State.
