Chiefs Traning Camp Moves
What do you think about the Chiefs training camp moving to St. Joe?
ST. JOSEPH, MO. -
Governor Jay Nixon announced on Thursday that a deal has been made with Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph as the location for the Kansas City Chief's training camp.
Under the finalized agreement, the Missouri Development Finance Board awarded the Chiefs $25 million in financial incentives to relocate their training camp to Missouri.
In exchange, the Chiefs agree to remain in St. Joseph for 10 years, and will contribute $10 million in proceeds from the sale of the tax incentives to help Missouri Western State University construct a new $13.4 million athletic facility on its campus. If the Chiefs don't follow through, they would owe penalties to the state.
"I am pleased my administration has been able to reach a solid agreement with the Chiefs that will bring this facility and the team's training camp to St. Joseph, while also respecting and protecting Missouri taxpayers' dollars," Gov. Nixon said in a statement.
"By locating their training camp at Missouri Western, the Chiefs will provide a top-quality new athletic facility for the university's students and the community, and the excitement of the annual training camp will help create jobs and boost the region's economy. I appreciate the hard work of my administration, the Chiefs, Missouri Western and the St. Joseph community that has brought this agreement to completion."
The Chiefs training camp has been held in River Falls, Wisconsin since 1991 at UW-River Falls. The 2009 training camp will still be held in River Falls, starting on July 30.
The Missouri Development Finance Board approved the revised deal on Thursday. The finance board originally approved the tax credits in December. But Gov. Nixon's administration later raised concerns that the agreement required the Chiefs to keep their camp in Missouri for only five years.
These final negotiations also resulted in final approval of construction plans for the new athletic facility at Missouri Western, and construction is expected to begin in July. The vote by the Board clears the way for the contract on the project to be awarded in the coming days.
