CLAY COUNTY, MO. - A worker is dead after a construction accident Wednesday afternoon when a roller fell on him near Excelsior Springs, Mo. Bill Ormsby, 57, of Kansas City, Kansas was killed.

According to Highway Patrol, the crew of 15-20 people were laying asphalt on a new section of roadway in the 25,000 block of NE 143rd Street in Clay County. The roller was too close to the edge of the road and started to go off the road. Ormsby jumped out of the machine. But, the equipment fell on top of him and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ormsby is said to have been an employee with Phillips Paving for more than 10 years.

The crew was paving the road to connect a county road to a new bridge. The project was ahead of schedule and all that remained was paving and putting up guard rails. It was supposed to be finished by the end of the month. But, now the project will be shut down until at least Monday.

"It's very, very tough for them. Working on a crew like that you have a tendancy to get very, very close to them. So, it's almost like a brother," said Ed Quick, Clay County Commissioner.
