Organizing tips to help you declutter after the holidays.
KANSAS CITY, Mo -
The stockings might have been hung by the chimney with care but if the holidays have left your house in chaos, there's help.
The number of professional organizers is quickly growing and they're sorting out more than just your stuff.
"If you don't use it, get rid of it."
Jacki Hamlin just recently moved into her home.
But the professional organizer quickly filed away any mess.
"If you don't have that organization, your whole family is in pure chaos," Hamlin said.
Hamlin and her friend, Kimi Cowden are among the quickly growing field of professional organizers.
The National Association of Professional Organizers has doubled it's membership in the past three years.
Organizers admit their job descriptions are growing, too.
"I am bringing peace to the home. I truly believe that clutter, clutters your mind," said Rebecca Boehner.
Boehner has a design background but at times she can feel like a therapist.
"You have to be a good listener. Let them vent, cry and figure out why. You can't tell them why it is. They have to find that out and that's what being a therapist is all about,"said Jacki Hamlin.
She noted that the clutter can reflect more than just a busy schedule.
"When you're helping somebody organize you're in their personal space, so the dirty laundry in the closet really does come out, " Kimi Cowden said.
Professional organizers point out that disorganization can be a symptom of something else: like ADD, chronic pain issues or depression.
