INDEPENDENCE, MO -
Independence Police are investigating a two vehicle crash that occurred this morning at about 7:50 a.m. on MO78 Hwy (23rd St) at Overton. Police said a 50-year-old Missouri driver of a 1996 Saturn was eastbound in the middle turn lane of MO-78, when he drifted into the inside westbound lane of MO78 Hwy and struck head-on a 1994 Ford pickup truck driven by a 28-year-old Independence residence. The resulting crash caused the closure of MO-78 Hwy during rush hour traffic for over an hour.
The driver of the Ford pickup truck refused treatment at the scene and was taken by family to an area hospital for evaluation. The driver of the Saturn had to be extricated from his vehicle and was flown by helicopter to an area hospital where he is being treated for serious injuries which are not life threatening.
It appears at this time that Improper Lane Use and Inattention are the probable contributing circumstances as to the cause of this crash. The investigation of this crash continues. No citations will be issued until the investigation is complete. Names of the two drivers are not being released at this time.
