The flu bug is hitting the Kansas City area hard. In fact, it hit the Kansas City Repertory Theater so hard it had to call off a Sunday performance, for the first time in 10 years.

The KC Rep Theater's "Into The Woods" opened on Friday, complete with amazing sets, colorful costumes and in a surprise twist: the flu.

"We've had several actors who have had it," Cynthia Rider, managing director at KC Rep said.

A large cast and actors sharing close quarters backstage is a recipe for spreading illness, but usually the show must go on.

"They go on almost no matter what but there finally came a point this weekend where we had to say, you know we really have to cancel one show because someone was too sick to go on," Rider said.

Sunday's matinee performance had to be canceled and they brought in two understudies for Sunday night's show.

In the last decade, no one can remember the Rep needing to cancel a show.

"Monday is historically their day off so we think everyone will be well and back to full strength tomorrow," Rider said.

They hope on Tuesday the seats will be full and the actors will return to center stage, bringing fairy tales to life

"The performers are incredible, the set is incredible, the costumes are lavish and funny and wonderful and so everything about it has come together and it's a delight to be apart of," Rider said.

"Into The Woods" runs through October 4 and tickets are still available.
