FORT LEAVENWORTH, KAN. - Not in our backyard. That is the message being sent from folks in Leavenworth, Kansas as talk continues on what to do with hundreds of detainees at Guantanamo Bay.

It's still unclear how Fort Leavenworth made it on the list of possible locations for these detainees. But, a few things are clear. The list is short. Leavenworth is on it. And, folks are not happy.

"This is a bad idea on an artificial hurry up time line," said Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kan.).

Sen. Brownback strongly opposes moving detainees to the Midwest.

"Mr. President listen to the American public. Do not move the detainees to Kansas. It's working where we have them now," said Sen. Brownback.

Fort Leavenworth is one of two sites in the U.S. being considered for what they're calling a courtroom-prison complex.

It would hold 229 detainees from Guantanamo Bay, and be heavily guarded.

The Washington Post reports the complex would also include long-term living quarters for the terror suspects.

"55 suspected or not, I don't want to worry about their friends coming attacking where I live, where my daughter lives, where my daughter goes to school," said Leavenworth resident Summer Buis.

Buis was one of dozens who showed up looking for answers and voicing concerns about the proposal. But, not everyone is so concerned.

"You can say we have people affiliated with the mob, there would be mobsters all over Leavenworth, not the case, not the case with detainees," said Wayne Marek.

Still some say it's just not a chance they are willing to take.

"If it happens, I'm pretty sure we will be looking for some where else to live because I don't want to be here," said Buis.

The Associated Press, citing administration sources, reported Sunday that the other choice for the detainees is a federal prison in Michigan.

Sen. Brownback and 2nd District Rep. Lynn Jenkins, both Republicans, have sponsored measures in Congress aimed at keeping the suspected terrorists from coming to Kansas.
