LENEXA, KS -
A man accused of impersonating a Lenexa cop was arrested Tuesday after getting into a physical argument with a woman he was on a date with. Aaron Lee Walton, 33, was charged with criminal restraint, battery, and false impersonation.
Sgt. Gary Graniewski with Lenexa police said Walton and a woman were on their second date when Walton asked the woman to come to his home. Walton and the woman were in separate vehicles. On the way to his home, police said the woman had second thoughts. She stopped her car at a McDonald's on 87th and Mauer in Lenexa, Kan. Police said Walton then stopped his car and they started arguing. Police said Walton grabbed the woman's arm and threatened to arrest her, claiming that he was a Lenexa police officer. When the woman resisted, Walton left and the woman called police.
"At some point there was a minor physical altercation between her and the suspect and at that point an employee from the restaurant opened the door to see what was going on and the suspect left the area," Sgt. Karl Burris with Lenexa Police said.
The woman told police Walton had said he had items that an officer would use. Police went to his home and arrested him. After a searching his house, police found items that could belong to an officer, but would not say what those items were.
"I know they did find some items inside his house that did corroborate her story," said Sgt. Burris said.
"I woke up and the yelling going on, dogs barking, and I looked out the window and there were guns drawn on my neighbor and it was pretty scary," said Chris Wehrhahm, neighbor.
Police said the woman was shaken up but not hurt from the incident.
Lisa Martin from the Metropolitian Organization to Counter Sexual Assault said the woman trusted her instincts and that may have prevented her from being hurt.
"It's really important to trust those gut feelings," Martin said. "The reason we have them is to keep us safe. A lot of times people are afraid that they will make a scene or embarrass the person they are with."
Martin said the woman was smart to go to a well-lit area with people around. She said anytime you are close to people, it brings you closer to getting help.
