In a five to four vote, the Liberty City council approved the mayor's proposed ordinance that would ban smoking in most places, with exceptions. The council voted down a city council member's ordinance that lets businesses buy a permit to allow smoking.
The city-wide smoking ban in Liberty begins in 30 days. Bars and restaurants that are exempt have up to a year to make changes that would make them exempt.
"I am the product of that my mother died of cancer and my father died of heart disease," said Pamela Anderson. "I grew up with severe bronchitis and still suffer to this day."
Anderson is a non-smoker affected by second-hand smoke. A group of doctors from Liberty also signed a petition, warning of second-hand smoke danger. But then there were people who wanted to protect the financial health liberties at bars and grills.
"There needs to be a point because the economic stage we're in right now, all these businesses are struggling to stay alive now, once this takes affect its going to make them go under too," said Gene Guess.
Guess cleans bars and grills in Kansas City, Mo. and says he's lost plenty of businesses since the smoking ban took affect there.
