Even though the Ozarks lay claim to the title of "Home of the White Squirrel," the mayor of Marionville says they were the first town to have the rare animals.
"And of course Olney, Illinois is our rival," Mayor Doris Rapp said. "They claim they've got more than we do, but we don't know."
The town is not only proud, but protective of the species. Marionville goes as far as capturing hawks and feral cats to protect the squirrels and people are fined $500 for hurting or capturing a white squirrel.
