NEVADA, MO - Two teen girls were stabbed and killed Sunday evening in Nevada, Mo. Garrett Mason, 17, was taken into custody in connection with the incident. The victims have been identified as Kylie M. Leyva, 14, and Anne E. Reed, 18, both of Nevada.

According to neighbors, Mason knew both girls. In fact, he lived across the street from Reed. The stabbings took place inside her apartment on Cedar Street around 6:30 Sunday night. Reed was finishing her senior year of high school and lived on her own.

A 14-year old friend, Kylie Leyva, was visiting when police say both were stabbed by the 17-year-old suspect, but detectives aren't saying what led to the attack.

According to the probable cause, Reed ran to a neighbors house after being stabbed and named Mason as the perpetrator. Also according to the probable cause, Garrett asked three friends to provide an alibi. During their investigation, police found bloody clothes in a backpack inside Mason's trunk.

Before moving out on her own, Reed stayed with one of her best friends, Elizabeth Short. The father of Elizabeth said he's been told there was a hit list and that his daughter was on it.

"Who's on the list, supposedly, this is all premeditated," said Clifford Short. "They had a list of more than, well, several people, and my daughter was on that list, and she was next on the list."

Despite repeated attempts the police chief for Nevada, Mo., has not returned our phone calls about the possibility of a hit list.

The two victims were transported by ambulance to the Nevada Regional Medical Center Sunday evening. From there they were transferred to Joplin hospitals by helicopter, however neither teen survived her injuries.

Mason is being held on $2 million bond and is expected to be formally charged with two counts of murder on Tuesday.
