Illinois police have charged a 27-year old man with first degree murder for the St.Louis area church shooting of Reverend Fred Winters.
The 45-year old victim grew up in the metro, attending high school in Raytown and seminary school in the Northland.
The Suspect
Terry Sedlacek is charged with first-degree murder and aggravated battery. Prosecutors aren't commenting on any possible motive in the attack. An attorney for the murder suspect said the man's mental condition has suffered since he came down with Lyme's disease several years ago.
A prosecutor says Sedlacek marked the day as "death day" in a planner. Madison County State's Attorney William Mudge says investigators found the planner in the home of alleged gunman.
Mudge also says Sedlacek brought enough rounds of ammunition to First Baptist Church in Maryville on Sunday to kill 30 people. Investigators say four rounds were fired before the his gun jammed.
Rev. Winters Remembered
Rev. Winters left the metro area 20-years ago to start his own church near St. Louis. But, his mother still lives in the area and he came back often to visit those who mentored him and now grieve his loss.
A picture of Reverend Winters and his family stares at those attending a trustee meeting for the Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.
The Kansas City Seminary is where Winters graduated from in 1991. He was currently an adjucnt professor and served as the national president of the alumni association.
"When anybody approached him at any time, 'How may I help you' and so those were fitting last words," said Dr. Philip Roberts.
Dr. Roberts is referring to what Winters reportedly said when a stranger, suspect Sedlacek, approached him Sunday morning during worship, and according to witnesses, shot him four times.
"His life was not taken because he had already given it away, he gave it away in his faith and trust to Jesus Christ and also in ministry to other people," said Dr. Roberts.
Winter's life of minstry began at the First Baptist Church of Raytown where he was baptized in 1981. And, where Pastor Paul Brooks continued to mentor him years later.
"He had a great way with people," said Pastor Brooks. "He was an excellent preacher. He was in a growing community and he reached out to people."
Fred Winters graduated from Raytown South in 1982. He was on the track and debate team. But, those who knew him say it was debate were he really excelled.
"He was good on his feet, quick thinker, good communicator drew people with his message," said Dr. Roberts.
"You know the church will recover and they'll get another pastor," said Pastor Brooks. "They'll go. But, that wife will not get her husband back and those daughters will never have their dad back."
Pastor Winters is married and has two children. When he first started preaching at First Baptist Church in Maryville, Ill., there were only 32 people attending. Over the years, that number grew to 1,200.
