KANSAS CITY, KAN -
A person was found dead on a smoldering mattress Sunday morning in Kansas City, Kan. Firefighters responded to a call in the 1300 block of 77th Street and discovered the victim in the basement of a townhome.
When firefighters arrived at the scene, a smoke alarm was going off and faint smoke was coming from the home.
They busted inside and discovered thick smoke coming from the basement. Upon further investigation they found a person on a smoldering mattress. They quickly removed the individual, but it was determined by medical personnel that the individual had died.
No one else was found to be inside the townhome. The cause of the fire is under investigation and fire officials estimate the damage to the residence to be about $10,000.
