KANSAS CITY, MO - A man is recovering at an area hospital after being shot by Kansas City police. Officers said they stopped John Battaglia, 25, for a traffic violation around 1:30 a.m. Monday at Anderson and Wheeling streets in Kansas City, Mo. when he jumped out of his car and started running away before returning to his car.

Police said Battaglia then tried to run over one of the officers. That officer fired at the suspect. Police said Battaglia continued driving and tried to run over other officers who were out of their vehicles armed and ready near Independence and Wilson streets. Officers fired at him, blowing out windows, but he continued east on Independence Avenue until his car was disabled near Manchester street.

Police said Battaglia was then taken to an area hospital with several gunshot wounds but is said to have non-life threatening injuries. No officers were injured in the incident.

Battaglia has been charged with armed criminal action and assault of a law enforcement officer.

One man said he recognized the suspect vehicle from an incident he had on Sunday.

"He was in the left hand turning lane," said Brian Williams. "I didn't think anything about it. Light went green, he swerved into on coming traffic like he was trying to race me."

It's unclear how many officers fired at that suspect, but they are on paid administrative leave. The police department said they have anywhere from three months to eight years experience on the force.
