KANSAS CITY, MO -
A man is under arrest for a very expensive joyride in a MAST ambulance.
Thomas Glisson, 41 of Kansas City, is accused of stealing an ambulance outside Research Medical Center Saturday morning about 4 a.m.
The MAST crew was dropping off a patient at the hospital and when they came outside, the ambulance was gone. They hadn't locked the ambulance.
"We're cooperating with police and trying to find out how he gained access inside of Research and thus to our vehicle," said Aaron Howell from MAST.
The crew immediately called police were able to use the GPS system inside the ambulance to track down the thief.
"We were tracking the vehicle. So, that's a nice added feature being able to find addresses to emergency calls, but we can also find our ambulance when it's inadvertently stolen," said Howell.
Police said they chased him into Independence where he lost control of the ambulance and crashed near Winner Road.
The joyride ended up causing about $125,000 in damage to the ambulance.
"We took it very serious at the time. When you have an emergency vehicle that's occupied by someone that's not familiar with the vehicle, it can become a danger. It's very dangerous," said Howell.
And, Glisson ended up getting a legal ride in an ambulance when he was rushed to a hospital with minor injuries from the crash.
