LOUISBURG, KAN -
Many people would be happy just living for 81 years, but how about being married for that long? Vern and Verbal Isenhower of Louisburg, Kansas, grew up on adjoining farms in Arkansas, first met over 90 years ago, and have now been married for 81 years. They say that they simply can't remember a time when they weren't together.
"And we just have the same thoughts, the same way we were brought up," said Verbal Isenhower, 97, who married her husband when she was 16. "My mother always said when you get married, you stay married, and she meant that."
The Isenhower's were married on Jan. 26, 1929. Now, after over eight decades of marriage, the couple have a total of 35 children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and now great-great grandchildren.
Verbal Isenhower says that they have always tried to have fun, enjoying time with their family, traveling, and keeping up with her husband's career as a rancher and horse trader.
Vern Isenhower says that he has been horsetrading longer than he has been married, saying that he remembers coming home at age 12 and announcing to his father that he'd bought his first horse for $17.
"I went and bought one at a sale and I got home and he said what did you buy that horse for?" said Vern Isenhower, 98. "And I said I wanted one of my own, and he said you could have gone out and caught you one. But I didn't. I bought it."
Now, so many years later, Vern and Verbal Isenhower say that they marvel at those newlywed teenagers from so many years ago.
"When you're young like that, right then is what counts," said Verbal Isenhower. "You don't think enough about what counts really, a lot of people don't. But we've made it so far."
