KANSAS CITY, MO - Authorities are investigating after campers said Jackson County Sheriff's deputies chased a allegedly stolen pickup truck through their campground late Friday night.

Campers at Longview Lake Campground claim that they saw a speeding pickup truck, with three Jackson County Sheriff's deputies in pursuit, tear through their campground around 11 p.m. on Friday night.

According to the campers, the truck and the deputies zoomed past tents and children riding bicycles.

"When you have campground, you think of families, kids, pets, belongings, personal items," said camper Stefanie Smith. "You do not continue with the chase. You just don't do it."

"We thought it was coming right at us at that point," said camper Shawna Robertson.

Officials with the Jackson County Sheriff's Department say that the incident didn't happen like that, saying that deputies stopped their chase before it could even be called a pursuit.

"We were called out there in reference to a disturbance," said Sgt. Steve Leone, a spokesman for the department. "It happened very quickly. (The driver of the pickup truck) took off in a dangerous and fast manner. (Deputies) lost site and immediately shut down and said it's too dangerous."

Sgt. Leone says that the incident is under review. The driver of the pickup truck, identified as a 32-year-old Independence man, was arrested a little later in Lee's Summit, and is currently in custody at the Jackson County Jail awaiting charges.
