INDEPENDENCE, MO - The Lake City Ammunition Plant in eastern Jackson County cranks out over one billion bullets a year for the U.S. military. But the plant paused for a visit from the Army's top soldier on Tuesday.

Army Chief of Staff General George Casey visited the plant to see first hand how the ammunition that U.S. troops rely on around the world.

"It's a very short distance between here and the safety of our soldiers," said plant manager Karen Davies. "We're serving the soldier. We're the good guys. And we want to make sure the ammunition we provide is the very best we can give."

Gen. Casey also answered questions about the military's future in Afghanistan.

"There's been a good, thorough discussion going on about the future of Afghanistan and I don't think people want to see anything less," said Gen. Casey.

When asked if the U.S. is putting it's troops in harm's way by not making a decision on whether or not to send a surge of troops to Afghanistan, Gen. Casey gave an emphatic "no."

Gen. Casey said that the Army is changing, transforming itself into the World's best counter-insurgency force, adding more troops and taking better care of those who serve their country.

"We are much better positioned today to accept some increased demand than we were two and half years ago," said Casey. "That said, we're not out of the woods."
