KANSAS CITY, MO. -
An eight-inch water main break under Interstate 29/35 just north of Independence Avenue has prompted officials to close the left northbound lane, Missouri Department of Transportation officials announced on Tuesday.
"The City of Kansas City, Missouri Water Services Department is working on a game plan," said kcICON Project Director Brian Kidwell in a statement. "We won't know the extent of the pavement damage or how long the repairs might take until we can get a better look underground."
Water started bubbling up through the pavement about 6 p.m. Monday evening. The emergency closure will create significant traffic backups in the northeast corner of the Downtown Loop.
"We encourage motorists to seek alternate routes until the damage is repaired and we can re-open the lane during peak travel times," said Kidwell.
Officials say that the $245 million kcICON project will reconstruct/rehabilitate 4.7 miles of Interstate 29/35 from just north of Route 210/Armour Road in North Kansas City into the northeast corner of the downtown freeway loop. The project includes improving outdated interchanges and the construction of the Christopher S. Bond Bridge - a new landmark, cable-stay Missouri River bridge.
