KANSAS CITY, MO - Federal health officials have announced that more than three million doses of swine flu vaccine will be available by the first week of October. For now, health agencies everywhere are amassing an army of volunteers to help with the vaccination process.

The Medical Reserve Corps of Greater Kansas City and the Mid-America Regional Council registered volunteers on Saturday to help with what is expected to be a busy flu season.

"I think it's to our advantage, we pay attention to it," volunteer Brett Blakemore said. "I believe disasters like Katrina have us all thinking, wait, this could happen, what can we do to be prepared for it."

Blakemore and his fiancé Elizabeth Schmitt signed on because they said they want to be on the front line when it comes to combating swine flu.

Health officials with MARC said that volunteers would be used for a variety of tasks in case of a large-scale flu epidemic, including setting up vaccination clinics, staffing phone banks or helping with in-home isolation or quarantines.

On Saturday, volunteers were trained and interviewed and received a photo I.D. badge. Volunteers are expected to serve for six months. For more information on volunteering, contact MARC at 816-200-0672.
