KANSAS CITY, MO - For 24-hours straight, a local barber collected hundreds of turkeys for those in need. Joey Thomas has collected turkeys for his Know Joey Foundation for three years, and for a guy who makes his living as a barber, it's quite a hair-raising effort.

But helping Kansas City's needy came easy for him.

"He just has a heart for that," said LaDonna Adams, mother.

His mother says since high school he's collected school supplies and cut hair for free. When he started the Know Joey? Foundation she wasn't surprised.

"Love, I mean, passion, giving back," said Thomas. "Everybody's wanting to do their part."

And for 24 hours, starting on Turkey Tuesday before Thanksgiving, Joey's Cuts at 49th & Indiana stayed open for turkey donations. Some who donated came from as far as Gladstone.

Last year the Know Joey Foundation collected 32 turkeys. This year they collected 253 for people in the community.

Thomas said he was surprised by the outpouring of support.

"Going from 30-something to over 200, it's amazing," he said.

A woman who received one of the donated turkeys said she's grateful.

"It means a lot to me because I didn't have the money to buy one," said Annie Davis, recipient.

The turkeys and non-perishables will go to three area charities. Some came from as far as Gladstone to drop off a bird.
