JACKSON COUNTY - A train smashed into a car carrying a pregnant woman and her husband at a railroad crossing in eastern Jackson County on Saturday. The couple survived and is now recovering in the hospital with a new addition to the family.

Police said the pregnant woman did suffer some injuries in the crash, but is expected to be okay. They said it's often a pretty grave outcome when a train hits a car and, by all accounts, this appears to be one very lucky couple.

A train was barreling down the tracks at the railroad crossing on 24 Highway east of Buckner on Saturday when police said the car with a man and his pregnant wife crossed the tracks and didn't make it.

"Apparently the car was almost across the tracks when it was struck by the train," Sgt. Steve Leone said.

The collision spun the car into a ditch. Shattered window glass still covers the tracks and other car parts are scattered nearby.

The man suffered only minor injuries, but his nine-months pregnant wife was life-flighted to a nearby hospital with head injuries, but in stable condition. Then, she delivered a pleasant surprise.

"The baby is healthy and doing fine, I was told it weighed over eight pounds," Sgt. Leone said.

There are no crossing gates or signals at the intersection, but warning signs on both sides.

"You just never know, you may never hear that doggone train and when they're on the tracks there it is," Sgt. Leone said.

While there are a lot of "could have's" at the crossing, most for now consider it as an early Christmas miracle.
