KANSAS CITY, MO - The Kansas City Zoo may be getting a financial boost. Missouri lawmakers are considering a bill that would allow cities to add a sales tax of up to a quarter-cent.

The money raised from the sales tax would go to support the zoo. In the past, the city has cut funding to the zoo even though the zoo's contract specified a certain amount of funding. Zoo director Randy Wisthoff says it's tough to run the zoo knowing when funding isn't a sure thing.

"The zoo is usually at the top of the list of who can we go to cut their operating budget or the management fee from the city," Wishoff said. "So that makes it very difficult for us to operate that way."

The bill has been introduced in both the missouri house and senate. But it's a process. If passed there, voters would still have to approve it.
